"Sleeping Palms" choreographer works with students from Moving Arts Dance Studio in Concord, CA

Choreographer and Dancer Jennifer Meek has begun working with the students of Moving Arts Dance Studio in Concord, CA on her work in progress titled "Sleeping Palms". The extraordinary students who are trained extensively in modern, improvisation, and contemporary partnering will be assisting her in creating images of a community or crowd of people.

The dancers seamlessly shift to different locations on the stage and pause while lighting designer Scott Belding brings up the lights to reveal their interesting relationships, connections, or lack there of. The dancers have their hair down and faces covered to remain anonymous. As time passes the students slowly begin to drift off stage until the last three dancers remain. The central dancer struggles to stay connected to the others until eventually everyone is disconnected and she is left alone. After a moment of quiet and solitude, movement springs forth expressing this experience of literal and symbolic loss. Man, the social creature, yearns to make connections and build up a community of support around himself. Is it possible to regain what has been lost? What steps do we take to rebuild? Can brilliant minds gather and make change? Interesting questions this choreographer/dancer hopes to explore more of...
